Its concave mansard roof, dormers, bracketed cornice, arched windows and three original 1870s porches show the style. The summer kitchen and privy echo the house's design and contribute to the property.","narrative":"Built in 1872-1873 on the west side of Vermont, Illinois, this three-story brick house follows the Second Empire style. A concave asphalt-shingled mansard roof with gabled dormers crowns the nearly square building. Paired carved brackets, brick corner quoins, raised brick panels between the second-story windows and segmental arched windows add detail, and three original porches survive. Inside, a central hall plan is finished with heavy Italianate woodwork, a walnut newel post and balusters. Behind the house stand a brick summer kitchen with its own mansard roof, later adapted as a garage, and a small brick privy with a pagoda-like roof. The house was built for Patterson Hamer, a Pennsylvania-born merchant who moved to Vermont in 1854. It was recognized for its architecture, as a good local example of a style popular in America from the 1860s through the 1880s. The architect and builder are unknown.","period_of_significance":"1873","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is still a single-dwelling residence with a secondary structure; the summer kitchen has been converted to a garage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.112399-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/20/8911/28891120/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/96001287.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001287/ec01a98f9e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001287/ec01a98f9e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Boscophotos","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_Patterson_Hamer_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Boscophotos</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_Patterson_Hamer_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891120","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patterson_Hamer_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22034116"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/fulton-county/hamer-patterson-house-96001287/"}
