It also has late Queen Anne details such as fish scale shingles and a front cutaway bay. It is described as one of the best remaining Cross Plan houses in Vermont, since the others have been covered in synthetic siding or altered.","narrative":"Built in 1908 at 504 West Third Street in Vermont, Illinois, this one-and-a-half story frame house was constructed by local contractor Fred Rankin for Elsworth and Susan Snowden, farmers who retired from their land west of town. It follows the Cross Plan form, with its long axis running perpendicular to the street and two wings crossing midway back beneath a hipped roof with lower cross gables. Late Queen Anne touches include fish scale shingles in the gable apexes and above the porch, plus a three-sided cutaway window bay. The wraparound porch originally had round Doric columns, replaced in the 1920s with square wood posts and a low brick wall. Inside, the classical-inspired woodwork, five-panel doors, built-in china cupboard and enclosed staircase remain. Other Cross Plan houses in Vermont have been covered with synthetic siding or heavily altered, which leaves this house among the best surviving examples of the type in the village. It was listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1908","architect_builder":"Rankin, Fred, Builder","architectural_style":"Other: Cross Plan; Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition with historic integrity; still used as a single-family dwelling.
