Its one-room-deep central-hall plan is intact, and its hand-planed heart-pine interior woodwork survives largely unaltered. The grain shed, smokehouse and other outbuildings add to the property's integrity.","narrative":"Near Sharpsburg in Coweta County, Georgia, this two-story I-house was built around 1835, probably by Mark Smith, as a hall-and-parlor dwelling. Within a few years a rear shed addition and a central hall were added, giving it a saltbox-like profile and a four-over-four-room plan. The frame is hewn pine timber marked with Roman numerals, set on granite piers, and the interior keeps hand-planed heart-pine walls, floors, ceilings, Federal-style mantels and cross-and-Bible doors. The two-acre property also holds a grain shed and smokehouse from about 1835, a well, two stone walls, two outbuilding foundations and a privy from the World War II period. The house is named for Dr. Robert Littleton Smith, a local dentist born there in 1853 who later farmed the land. It was listed for its architecture, as a rare intact I-house in Middle Georgia with an exceptionally high level of interior integrity. It was rehabilitated between 1993 and 1995.","period_of_significance":"1835-1945","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal; Other: I-house","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; rehabilitated 1993-1995 with a new kitchen wing, rebuilt front porch and rebuilt cookhouse.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.52602-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/96001139.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001139/b13a25a59c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001139/b13a25a59c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Timkemp","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Robert_L._and_Sarah_Alberta_Smith_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Timkemp</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Robert_L._and_Sarah_Alberta_Smith_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207693","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134289456"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/coweta-county/smith-dr-robert-l-and-sarah-alberta-house-96001139/"}
