It is a custom-designed truss bridge with an I-beam cantilever unit and suspended span. Its camelback through truss span and cantilever unit are rare in Texas, and its long approach and pointed-nose piers are unusual.","narrative":"Carrying US 190 across the Neches River at the Jasper and Tyler county line, this 1,601-foot steel bridge was designed by the Texas Highway Department and built between 1941 and 1943 by the Gaylord Construction Company of Houston. It combines a 240-foot Parker through truss, a 125-foot camelback through truss, a three-span I-beam cantilever unit with a suspended span, and 27 I-beam approach spans. It replaced the Town Bluff Toll Ferry and was the last of three bridges built to replace Neches River ferries on the old State Highway 45 route. Engineers lengthened the truss spans to avoid a pier in mid-river and used pointed piers to deflect drift. It is the only documented Texas highway truss bridge with a cantilever unit of this kind and the last camelback truss span designed by the state highway department. Wartime steel shortages shaped its construction, and it still carries traffic over B.A. Steinhagen Lake.","period_of_significance":"1941-1943","architect_builder":"Designer: Texas Highway Department; Fabricator: Virginia Bridge Company of Roanoke, Virginia; Builder: Gaylord Construction Company of Houston, Texas","architectural_style":"Other: Parker through truss bridge","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains in place and in service carrying highway traffic; only minor repairs in 1982 and a 1994 sufficiency rating of 34.9 noted.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.877303-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/11/9697/40969711/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/96001121.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001121/204411f7ec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001121/204411f7ec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Lance L Lowry","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_190_bridge_at_the_Neches_River,_Dam_B,_TX_-_panoramio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lance L Lowry</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_190_bridge_at_the_Neches_River,_Dam_B,_TX_-_panoramio.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969711","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_190_Bridge_at_the_Neches_River","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55315818"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/jasper-county/us-190-bridge-at-the-neches-river-96001121/"}
