It is also one of only four Craftsman-style Carnegie libraries in the state. It was the community's only library until a new county library opened in 1978.","narrative":"Completed in September 1921, this single-story Craftsman bungalow on Santa Fe Street in Riverbank served as the town's Carnegie-funded branch library. It has a gable roof truncated with slight hips at the ends, a central porch supported by two heavy wooden columns, a French door entrance, triplet windows under transoms, and a brick chimney at one end. Shiplap siding, flower boxes on shaped brackets and a concrete foundation complete the exterior, which is virtually unaltered. Riverbank's first library, a few shelves in a store, was lost in a 1917 fire. That year Stanislaus County received $3,000 from the Carnegie Corporation for a Riverbank branch. Residents paid for the site through contributions, and the lot was chosen partly for a large oak tree. It was among the last Carnegie libraries built in California and one of only four in the Craftsman style. It remained the community's only library until 1978 and now houses the Riverbank Museum.","period_of_significance":"1921-1946","architect_builder":"Mr. Hoose, architect; Mr. Miller, builder","architectural_style":"Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Now houses the Riverbank Museum; the building is described as well maintained and virtually unaltered on the exterior.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.472578-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/96001077.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001077/7702eaedab-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001077/7702eaedab-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"NewmanHouse2004","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Riverbank_Carnegie_Library.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">NewmanHouse2004</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Riverbank_Carnegie_Library.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857838","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133568632"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/stanislaus-county/riverbank-branch-library-96001077/"}
