It is a good, intact example of a T-plan school built with limited WPA funding. It also reflects Depression-era federal building programs.","narrative":"Sumner High School is a one-story, T-plan, brick-veneer building on Walnut Street in Sumner, Worth County, Georgia. Built in 1938-1939 with $26,250 in bonds and WPA labor, it opened in fall 1939 as the first consolidated white high school for this part of the county. It taught home economics and agriculture, and in its first year had eleven teachers and 374 students. It served as a high school until 1960, when consolidation moved students to Sylvester, and it then became an elementary school. Ornament is minimal apart from a brick parapet over the main entrance, but the interior keeps its original wood floors, transoms, doors, wainscoting, auditorium seats and light fixtures. The school is significant for education, architecture, and the federal Depression-era building programs that funded it. The classrooms are now vacant, though the auditorium still hosts community events. Two later buildings on the lot, dating from 1959 and 1962, do not contribute to its significance.","period_of_significance":"1938-1946","architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built under the auspices of the Works Projects Administration (WPA).","architectural_style":"OTHER/T-plan","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Classroom areas are vacant and the building is in fair to good condition; the auditorium is used occasionally for community events.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.452969-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/96001035.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001035/796346644b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001035/796346644b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sumner_High_School.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sumner_High_School.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209999","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumner_High_School_and_auditorium","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16900894"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/worth-county/sumner-high-school-96001035/"}
