It also documents the spread of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Western New York period, when parishes were founded in communities along developing transportation corridors.","narrative":"St. Paul's Church is a small wooden Gothic Revival church on Genesee Street in the village of Chittenango, Madison County, New York. Built in 1865-66 by an anonymous local builder, it follows the board-and-batten style associated with Richard Upjohn's designs for modest Episcopal churches. Church tradition holds that St. Peter's Church in Cazenovia served as its model. The front facade is notable for six tall pinnacles with trefoil ornaments, jigsawn trim and pointed-arch openings with hood moldings. Inside, curving timber braces and scissor trusses support a dark-stained beaded-board ceiling. The church was built on the filled turn basin of the Chittenango Canal, in a village that grew with the Erie Canal. It represents the parishes that spread across the region in the mid-nineteenth century under Bishop De Lancey. Apart from a closing in 1880-81, it has served the community continuously, and its commercial village setting retains much of its older scale.","period_of_significance":"1865-1866","architect_builder":"Anonymous local builder; design freely adapted from Richard Upjohn's designs for small wooden Episcopal churches","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Continuously in service as a church except for a brief closing in 1880-81; the rear parish hall (1928) has been remodeled several times and lacks historic integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.086098-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000956.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000956/e1f3d7d3f7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000956/e1f3d7d3f7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Paul%27s_Church_Chittenango_NY_May_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Paul%27s_Church_Chittenango_NY_May_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313519","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Paul%27s_Church_(Chittenango,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7591051"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/madison-county/st-pauls-church-96000956/"}
