Brown, mostly built about 1907-1910.","why_significant":"The district is a well-preserved example of a small-scale industrial community that records Ipswich's hosiery industry. It also shows the close tie between immigrant workers and their employment, since the tenements were built to house mill workers. The mill and houses keep their basic scale, form and spatial layout, with very few intrusions.","narrative":"Brown Stocking Mill Historic District in Ipswich, Massachusetts, is a compact industrial village west of the town center. Harry B. Brown, an experienced Ipswich Mills supervisor and agent, bought undeveloped land around the turn of the century, laid out new streets, and by the end of 1907 had built a mill on a hill along with several tenements. A second group of houses followed between 1907 and 1910. In all, 42 tenements were built for mill workers, mostly gable-front dwellings of 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 stories set close to the street, with a few larger boarding houses. The mill kept its original form apart from some mid-20th-century additions and a removed shipping room. Many houses have gained synthetic siding, new sashes and enclosed porches, though some keep original slate roofs, clapboards and details. The district was listed because it preserves a clear picture of an early 20th-century stocking-making community and the immigrant workers who lived beside their jobs.","period_of_significance":"1907-1914","architect_builder":"Harry B. Brown (developer)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Queen Anne; Other/no style, early 20th-century Industrial","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"The mill complex and tenements survive with some alterations. The tenements now serve as single-family residences and one commercial building. Two houses are modern replacements on earlier dwelling sites.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.587144-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/48/7950/63795048/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/96000924.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000924/78a01c66f0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000924/78a01c66f0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:39_Brownville,_Ipswich_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:39_Brownville,_Ipswich_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795048","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_Stocking_Mill_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715422"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/brown-stocking-mill-historic-district-96000924/"}
