It keeps eighteenth-century Germanic hardware reused from an earlier stone house on the site. It also has fish-scale slate siding from the 1880s that is found on no other house in Montgomery.","narrative":"Set on a 1.4 acre parcel along Albany Post Road in the agricultural northern part of Montgomery, this two-story, five-bay farmhouse dates to about 1850. It has a center hall plan, a raised stone foundation, a gable roof, six-over-six windows, wide lintels and a Greek Revival doorway with sidelights and pilasters. Fish-scale slate siding, probably added in the 1880s, covers parts of the walls and is not known on any other house in the town. The house replaced an earlier stone dwelling built by Wilhelm Smidt, an early German Palatine settler, and it reuses doors, strap hinges and a box lock from that building. A summer kitchen, a small barn and a stone-lined well also survive from the mid-nineteenth century. The property was recognized for showing how Greek Revival design was adapted locally, how it grew out of the older farmhouse tradition, and for its rare surviving details.","period_of_significance":"ca.1850-ca.1880","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still a single-dwelling residence; restoration was begun in the 1980s and continued by later owners.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.060248-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000863.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000863/6ecd8f793f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000863/6ecd8f793f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320744","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smith_House_(Montgomery,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7764916"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/smith-house-the-96000863/"}
