Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois, built circa 1860 according to local tradition for Theodore H. O. Mattfeldt.","why_significant":"The house is locally significant under Criterion C as a good example of a simple hipped-roof Italianate residence. It has a low-pitched roof, paired brackets and arched windows with keystones. Among Italianate houses in Mt. Pulaski, it has undergone the least exterior alteration.","narrative":"Built around 1860 on the corner of Marion and Cooke Streets, one block west of the square in Mt. Pulaski, this two-story brick house reflects the Italianate style popular in mid-nineteenth-century America. It has a cubic form, a low-pitched hipped roof with wide eaves and paired brackets, and tall, narrow six-over-six windows under segmental brick arches, many with prominent keystones. The walls are six bricks thick, made with bricks from the local Van Hise factory. Theodore H. O. Mattfeldt, a German-born cooper, store clerk, county surveyor, postmaster and druggist, is believed to have had it built. In the 1920s the house became a rooming house, and it returned to single-family use in 1937. In the 1950s a chiropractic office operated in the former library. Compared with other Italianate houses in town, it has kept more of its original exterior, which is the basis for its recognition as a good local example of the style.","period_of_significance":"c. 1860","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single-family dwelling with a health care/medical office function listed; the form lists the owners as preparers and describes past use as a rooming house (1920s-1937).","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.464668-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/73/8934/28893473/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/96000853.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000853/bce9665de4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000853/bce9665de4-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Theodore_H._O._Mattfeldt_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Theodore_H._O._Mattfeldt_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893473","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_H._O._Mattfeldt_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16901538"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/logan-county/mattfeldt-theodore-h-o-house-96000853/"}
