It is bordered on the south by Magee Street.","why_significant":"The district is argued to be significant under Criterion C for its late nineteenth and early twentieth century architecture, including Colonial Revival, Four Square, Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival examples, and a group of institutional buildings. It is also argued to be significant under Criterion A for its association with industry, including the Chest Creek Improvement Company, Patton Clay Manufacturing Company and nearby coal mines, and the houses of their managers and workers.","narrative":"Patton's oldest residential neighborhood lies on a hillside north of Magee Street and holds the borough's largest concentration of historic houses and institutional buildings. Built mostly between 1892 and 1920, it includes Four Square, Colonial Revival and Queen Anne residences, along with company-built frame and brick houses for mine and clay plant workers. Many of its streets and sidewalks were paved with Patton bricks made by the nearby Patton Clay Manufacturing Company, founded in 1893. The district's churches, including St. Mary's Church of 1899 with its polychrome brick bell tower, and its 1893 school buildings, which show Romanesque Revival and Gothic detailing, reflect the settlement's growth. Its houses also record the managers, physicians and merchants who lived in the area. Because little construction occurred after 1920, the streetscape remains largely intact. The district is considered important for showing how a diversified coal and clay town housed its different social classes side by side.","period_of_significance":"1892-1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival, Four Square, Romanesque Revival, Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Two public schools at Fifth and Beech Avenues are described as vacant; the district has seen little new construction since 1920.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:38.139958-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/96000714.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000714/6b05ef5ded-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000714/6b05ef5ded-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Patton_St._Mary%27s_RCC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Patton_St._Mary%27s_RCC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996883","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patton_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7148636"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/cambria-county/patton-historic-district-96000714/"}
