A. Folger & Company, coffee producers. It combines an office and manufacturing section with a lower warehouse annex.","why_significant":"The nomination presents it as a rare downtown survivor of the 1906 earthquake and fire, and the only extant pre-1906 industrial building in San Francisco by architect Henry A. Schulze. It is also noted for its unusual pile-supported structural system, which came through both the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes, and for its role in the city's coffee industry.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Howard and Spear Streets in San Francisco, this red brick building was constructed in 1904-1905 for J. A. Folger & Company as offices, a coffee manufacturing plant and a warehouse. Architect Henry A. Schulze designed it in the Renaissance Revival style, with banded brick pilasters, arched windows, terra cotta sills and a corbelled cornice. A lower, more simply detailed warehouse adjoins the main block. The structure rests on wooden pilings driven into bay fill and uses a steel frame with a mix of wood and concrete floors. It came through the 1906 earthquake nearly undamaged and was spared by the fire, while the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake caused damage that led to a full seismic retrofit. The company used it as a West Coast headquarters until 1963, and it later became offices. It is the only pre-1906 survivor in its immediate neighborhood and Schulze's only surviving pre-1906 industrial work in the city.","period_of_significance":"1905-1946","architect_builder":"Schulze, Henry A., AIA","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Renaissance Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as offices since the late 1960s conversion; seismically retrofitted and rehabilitated after 1989 damage from the Loma Prieta earthquake.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.839336-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/96000679.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000679/2c548baf42-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000679/2c548baf42-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"The wub","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Folger_Coffee_Company_Building,_San_Francisco_2023-07-18.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">The wub</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Folger_Coffee_Company_Building,_San_Francisco_2023-07-18.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861110","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folger_Coffee_Company_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5464348"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-francisco/folger-coffee-company-building-96000679/"}
