Built about 1825 as a land office for John LaFarge, it is now known as the Orleans Hotel.","why_significant":"The building is a distinctive example of Federal period architecture and of early stone craftsmanship in the region. It played a pivotal role in the early settlement of Orleans as headquarters for John LaFarge's development efforts. It has also served as a hotel and center of community social activity for over 170 years.","narrative":"Built around 1825 at the corner of Main and Mill Streets in LaFargeville, this two-story limestone building began as a land office for John LaFarge, a wealthy French shipping merchant who bought a large tract of northern New York. It was unusually large for a land office and likely served as headquarters for his development work, and possibly as his temporary home while his mansion was built. Its Federal character shows in the symmetrical five-bay front, the recessed central entrance with sidelights and fanlight, and dressed limestone lintels and quoins. After LaFarge left in 1838, Delano D. Calvin bought it and ran it as a hotel and stagecoach stop. A wooden kitchen addition and new interior finishes were added in 1910. Despite alterations, the stonework, original plan, woodwork and mantels survive. It remains a hotel and gathering place, and it is the earliest structure in the town's multiple property listing.","period_of_significance":"c.1825-1910","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic / Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a hotel and social center; the interior has some deterioration, including an original kitchen in severe disrepair and a cemented-over east porch platform in poor condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.372912-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000668.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000668/ab164cc9f1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000668/ab164cc9f1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Stephen Schweitzer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:La_Farge_Land_Office.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Schweitzer</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:La_Farge_Land_Office.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313286","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Farge_Land_Office","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6462415"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/la-farge-land-office-96000668/"}
