It holds four farms, houses, farm outbuildings, a store, cemeteries and a trace of the eighteenth-century Carolina Road.","why_significant":"The district is nominated under Criteria A and C for its well-preserved traditional farm landscape in the areas of agriculture, architecture, commerce and transportation. It contains buildings from the early 1800s through the 1900s, including a Federal brick house dated 1820, a rare log purlin roof form, and the Carolina Road trace. Few modern intrusions affect its historic character.","narrative":"Cahas Mountain Rural Historic District covers about 1,450 acres of alluvial fields, rolling upland and forested ridge in north-central Franklin County, Virginia. Most historic buildings belong to four farms, the earliest being the Boon-Bernard Farm. Its main house, built in 1820 by John and Susan Boon, is a two-story Federal brick dwelling with Flemish-bond brickwork. The farm also has an antebellum log granary, a 1917 frame barn, tenant houses from the 1930s, and a 1906 store that once supplied the neighborhood and paid workers in scrip. Elsewhere in the district are the Taylor-Price House of about 1821, later houses of Boon descendants, abandoned log and boxed tenant houses, two family cemeteries with fieldstone markers believed to mark slave burials, and a well-preserved stretch of the Carolina Road. A one-room log tenant house has a log purlin roof, a form now extremely rare. The district was listed for its agriculture, architecture, commerce and transportation history, spanning about 1750 to 1945.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1750-1945","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal, Greek Revival, Late Victorian, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, Modern Movement","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Farms remain in agricultural and residential use; some tenant houses are abandoned, and of eight principal residences, six are contributing.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.856785-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/6807/41680735/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/96000593.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000593/b7f64ed387-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000593/b7f64ed387-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Apple_at_Naff,_outside_Boones_Mill.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Apple_at_Naff,_outside_Boones_Mill.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680735","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cahas_Mountain_Rural_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712118"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/franklin/cahas-mountain-rural-historic-district-96000593/"}
