The main house dates to the second quarter of the nineteenth century, probably 1845.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Sunnyside is a rare, substantially unaltered example of a mid-nineteenth-century Northern Neck farmstead. The house keeps its original exterior and interior decoration, and its mix of small outbuildings is seldom found together with such integrity. It is significant for architecture under Criterion C.","narrative":"Sunnyside is a farmhouse on the south side of US 360 at Heathsville, in Virginia's Northern Neck. The two-story, central-passage house is built of brick, with Flemish bond on the front facade, and has a columned portico, six-over-six windows and a standing-seam metal roof. A kitchen wing and rear additions were added, and brick outbuildings, a carriage house, corncrib and barn survive nearby. The date of construction is uncertain. Local tradition says 1827, but tax records suggest John J. Betts built the house in 1845. Later owners included the Harding, Downing and Smith families, among them Lloyd Smith, a longtime county commonwealth's attorney. The farm has shrunk to about three acres. The property was listed for its architecture. The house and its outbuildings are largely unaltered, and they recall the mixed-farming way of life of the Northern Neck before the Civil War. The period of significance runs from about 1822 to 1883, when a photograph shows the house much as it stands.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1822-1883","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with a secondary structure; the outbuildings are used for storage and the farm is no longer worked.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.514954-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/6822/41682268/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/96000580.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000580/a488ff8cd4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000580/a488ff8cd4-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sunnyside_at_Heathsville.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sunnyside_at_Heathsville.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682268","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunnyside_(Heathsville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713272"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/northumberland-county/sunnyside-96000580/"}
