The house was built by John Edward Belle (J.E.B.) Shutt.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is architecturally significant as an intact, unaltered example of late nineteenth-century rural farmhouse forms in Davie County, combining hall and parlor and story-and-a-jump house types. It also argues the property is significant in social history and commerce for its association with the Shutt family's woodworking and undertaking businesses in Advance.","narrative":"Built by John Edward Belle Shutt in 1885 as a one-and-one-half story timber-frame hall and parlor house, the rural complex in Advance was enlarged in 1905 with a three-bay story-and-a-jump house joined to it by a breezeway. The house has a stone-pier foundation, weatherboard walls, a central stair hall and interior woodwork Shutt made himself, including a turned newel post and balusters. The surrounding outbuildings include a log wellhouse and smokehouse dating to about 1885, a granary, a woodshed, a garage and a privy. Shutt ran a woodshop and undertaking business from the 1890s and into the 1920s, and the complex reflects the work of a craftsman and businessman in a small Piedmont community. The property is listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved example of late nineteenth-century farmhouse design, and for its link to the Shutt family's wood products and undertaking trades in Advance.","period_of_significance":"1885-1932","architect_builder":"Shutt, John Edward Belle (J.E.B.)
