It also reflects nineteenth-century school reform and the history of education in the town of Coeymans and the small hamlet of Coeymans Hollow.","narrative":"District School No. 7 is a one-room brick schoolhouse on NYS Route 143 in Coeymans Hollow, Albany County. Built in 1879 and opened in 1880, it replaced an earlier wooden school that the district had owned since 1830. The building is a single story with common-bond brick walls, a stone foundation, broad overhanging eaves, hood-molded windows and doors, and an open wooden belfry. The interior keeps its original plan of an entrance vestibule and one classroom, along with bead board walls, wainscoting and plank floors. The design reflects nineteenth-century school reforms, including a separate entry vestibule, high ceilings for ventilation and evenly spaced windows for light. Students used the school for 88 years until it closed in 1957. A historical society later bought it and operates it as a local history museum. Its high degree of preservation makes it a rare surviving example of a once-common building type and a reminder of the hamlet's past.","period_of_significance":"1879-1946","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Closed as a school in 1957; now maintained and operated as a local history museum by a historical society.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.37452-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000562.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000562/4293a7f3ad-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000562/4293a7f3ad-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:District_School_No._7_Coeymans_Hollow_NY_May_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:District_School_No._7_Coeymans_Hollow_NY_May_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316215","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_School_No._7","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5283376"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/albany-county/district-school-no-7-96000562/"}
