The house was built about 1750 and remodeled and enlarged about 1845-50 in the Greek Revival style.","why_significant":"The house is significant architecturally as an intact settlement-era farmhouse that was later enlarged in the Greek Revival style. It shows the shift from plain eighteenth-century pioneer farmhouses to the standardized styles of the second quarter of the nineteenth century. The farm setting and barn show how a working farmstead developed over time. It is also linked to Jacob Bookstaver, one of the earliest settlers of Montgomery.","narrative":"Set on a 122-acre tract of mostly open fields in the agricultural north end of Montgomery, New York, this farmhouse began as a pioneer dwelling around 1750 and was enlarged around 1845-50. The two-story, five-bay main block sits on a raised stone foundation. Its Greek Revival additions include a paneled front door with sidelights and pilasters, wide window lintels, corner pilasters and a broad cornice. Inside, exposed beaded beams, early paneled doors, a forged thumb latch and Germanic strap hinges survive from the eighteenth century, alongside Greek Revival woodwork in the hall and parlor. A large early-1800s barn is also part of the property. Jacob Bookstaver was among the first German settlers in Montgomery and a founder of the German Reformed Church, and his family held the farm for nearly 150 years. The property was listed for showing how local farmhouse building and farm life changed from the colonial period to the mid-nineteenth century.","period_of_significance":"ca.1750 - ca. 1845","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling; a 1980s west addition and a 1915 garage are noted as modern or non-contributing elements.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.891038-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000558.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000558/2e1d5d21a6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000558/2e1d5d21a6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jacob_Bookstaver_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jacob_Bookstaver_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320584","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob_Bookstaver_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6118398"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/bookstaver-jacob-house-96000558/"}
