Its simple round-arched windows, narrow cornices and symmetrical form reflect a builder's adaptation of the post-Revolutionary Federal style. The 1865 bell tower and vestibules and the 1891 chapel are described as sympathetic additions, and the surviving nineteenth-century churchyard adds to its significance.","narrative":"Canterbury Presbyterian Church, at 30 Clinton Street in Cornwall, Orange County, is a fieldstone church raised in 1826 for a Presbyterian congregation organized in the mid-1820s. It is one and one-half stories tall, with a gable front, round-arched windows and restrained Federal detailing. In 1865 the congregation added a square brick bell tower and flanking entrance vestibules, and in 1891 a brick memorial chapel named for former pastor Rev. Jonathan Silliman was built by local contractor H.R. Taylor. A fellowship hall followed in 1961. Inside, the pews, floors, wainscoting and wall finishes are original. Behind the church lies its churchyard, with about fifty markers, the earliest from the 1830s, showing willow-and-urn and floral motifs. The property was listed for architecture because it is an unusually intact example of a Federal-era meeting house, one of the town's oldest surviving churches, and a local landmark recalling the early settlement of this part of the Hudson Valley.","period_of_significance":"ca.1826-ca.1891","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic / Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious property, with the cemetery also listed as a current function; the form says the building remains virtually intact from its period of significance.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.319426-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000556.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000556/1c868da49b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000556/1c868da49b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Canterbury_Presbyterian_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Canterbury_Presbyterian_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314145","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canterbury_Presbyterian_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5033679"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/canterbury-presbyterian-church-96000556/"}
