The seven-acre property also includes the ca.1779 Joseph Sutherland House, a ca.1840 guest house and a ca.1890 privy.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a representative and rare surviving brick Greek Revival dwelling in Cornwall, with a high degree of integrity in its original room layout, doors, marble mantels, moldings, staircase and full-height portico. The late eighteenth-century Sutherland House adds significance as an example of Cornwall's Revolutionary-era vernacular building. Together the two buildings reflect the early growth of the community.","narrative":"Cromwell Manor is a two-story, five-bay brick house on a knoll along Angola Road in Cornwall, New York. David Cromwell, a local merchant and gentleman farmer, built it around 1835 on land he bought from Joseph Sutherland in 1830. Its Greek Temple-front design features a full-height portico with six square columns, a flat roof, a wide frieze and a north wing. Inside, the center-hall plan has two parlors with sliding pocket doors, marble mantels, wide board floors and an intact staircase with original newel posts. The house was listed as a rare surviving brick Greek Revival dwelling from Cornwall's post-Revolutionary growth. The seven-acre property also holds the ca.1779 Sutherland House, once a tavern and an example of the area's Revolutionary-era vernacular building, along with a ca.1840 guest house and a ca.1890 privy. Together the buildings show how local housing shifted from farmers' homes to larger houses for merchants. The Cromwell family kept the house until 1941.","period_of_significance":"ca.1779, ca.1835-ca.1890","architect_builder":"David Cromwell (builder/owner of Cromwell Manor); Joseph Sutherland (built the Sutherland House)","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single-family dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.401775-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000555.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000555/3da73aa427-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000555/3da73aa427-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cromwell_Manor.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cromwell_Manor.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314153","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cromwell_Manor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1140888"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/cromwell-manor-96000555/"}
