The ca. 1800 kitchen/slave house is a rare, well-preserved example of a service building type that is fast disappearing from the Southern agrarian landscape. Together they illustrate the housing and economy of a middling slaveholding family in Virginia's Southside.","narrative":"Brandon Plantation is a 141-acre farmstead in southwest Halifax County, Virginia, between the Dan River and the North Carolina line. It began as the homestead of the Brandon family, who settled the area in the mid-eighteenth century. The main resource is a two-part frame farmhouse: a three-bay section from about 1800 and a two-bay addition from about 1842. The later section holds the property's finest woodwork, including marbleized mantels and a stair attributed to Thomas Day, a free Black cabinetmaker from nearby Milton, North Carolina. Day is known to have worked for the Brandon family. A kitchen/slave house of about 1800 stands west of the dwelling and is notable for its deep east eave, sliding board-and-batten hatches and original hearth crane. Also on the property are a stone-lined well, a walled family cemetery and seven later farm buildings. The house was altered in the 1960s and was being studied for restoration, while the outbuilding had been carefully restored.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1800-1850","architect_builder":"Day, Thomas (attrib.)","architectural_style":"Early Republic; Mid-19th-century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The kitchen/slave house has been restored and the house was being studied for a scholarly restoration, having been remodeled in the 1960s.
