It was installed around 1906 by the Highway Commission of Los Angeles County.","why_significant":"It is the earliest and only remaining pre-war road marker in Pasadena, one of three known examples there. It represents early efforts by the Good Roads movement and the Highway Commission to build an organized road-marking system in Los Angeles County. Despite a 1994 move of about twenty-five feet, it keeps its setting and historic associations.","narrative":"A concrete tablet about five feet long, twelve inches wide and six inches thick sits in the grass strip beside East Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena. Chiseled lettering gives the distance of 11 miles to the old Los Angeles County Courthouse, the block numbers 220/222 and the initials F. B. for Foothill Boulevard. It was installed around 1906 by the Highway Commission of Los Angeles County, which marked six routes with concrete milestones before it was dissolved in 1908. The markers used the Ten Block System developed by Albert L. Bancroft, which divided each mile into ten blocks for addressing and mileage. This milestone is the earliest and only surviving pre-war road marker in Pasadena, and it reflects the Good Roads movement and the growth of automobile travel. A driveway for a new development displaced it in 1994, so it was moved about twenty-five feet east, keeping the same depth, tilt and distance from the curb.","period_of_significance":"c.1906-1908","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"OTHER: Road Marker","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Relocated about twenty-five feet east in 1994 after a driveway entrance for a new commercial development displaced it; current function listed as vacant/not in use.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.468877-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/96000421.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000421/7570334536-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000421/7570334536-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Brianyoungramirez","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Foothill_Boulevard_Milestone_(Mile_11).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Brianyoungramirez</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Foothill_Boulevard_Milestone_(Mile_11).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857468","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foothill_Boulevard_Milestone","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14681977"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/foothill-boulevard-milestone-mile-11-96000421/"}
