The house and barn date from between 1861 and 1874, with alterations around 1924-1930.","why_significant":"The farm is nominated under Criterion A for agriculture. Its size and production were typical of Brecksville farms in 1880, and its later use as a weekend retreat, horse stable and leased truck farm shows how valley farms adapted when western competition and suburban growth pressured agriculture.","narrative":"Stebbens Farm is a farmstead on a wooded plateau east of Riverview Road in Brecksville, near the Cuyahoga River, the Ohio and Erie Canal and the Valley Railway. Contributing buildings are a one-and-one-half story house, a plank frame barn and a horse barn later used as a garage. A corn crib, chicken house and privy also contribute. The house was altered around 1930 with Craftsman features, including bands of horizontal windows, exposed rafter ends and a wraparound porch. Tax records and atlases indicate the farm was developed under Henry Stebbens between 1861 and 1874. An 1880 census comparison shows it matched typical Brecksville farms in size and output. After 1902 it passed to the Sauer family, then in 1923 to the Hraback sisters, who used it as a weekend retreat, boarded polo horses and leased fields for truck farming. This shift illustrates how valley farms adapted to western competition and park and suburban growth.","period_of_significance":"1861-1930","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements: Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Current use is listed as vacant; the property is federally owned.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.818176-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/96000381.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000381/d4371d643c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000381/d4371d643c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:STEBBENS_FARM,_BRECKSVILLE,_CUYAHOGA_COUNTY,_OH.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85001123","name":"Valley Railway Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/valley-railway-historic-district-85001123/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984586","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q100425198"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/stebbens-farm-96000381/"}
