Castle in a Prairie School style.","why_significant":"The house is an excellent local example of Prairie School-influenced residential design and retains a high degree of integrity from its 1921 renovation. It is one of a handful of large dwellings Castle designed in this style in Abilene. It is listed under Criterion C for Architecture at the local level.","narrative":"This two-story stucco house at 1546 North 5th Street in Abilene was built around 1901 for Dr. James M. Alexander, founder of the Alexander Sanitarium, which was believed to be the first hospital between Fort Worth and El Paso. The original Victorian house was later bought by merchant T. C. Campbell, who in 1919 hired local architect David S. Castle to redesign it. Work was completed in 1921. The result is a Prairie School-influenced home with bold asymmetrical massing, a low-pitched roof, deep bracketed eaves, massive capped porch columns, and a porch and porte cochere wrapping the southeast corner. Castle reused some earlier windows, doors and the rear porch, and the floor plan still follows the original footprint. The house remained in the Campbell family until 1987. It was listed for its architecture, as an excellent example of a style widely used in Abilene homes of the period, and it retains strong integrity from the 1921 work.","period_of_significance":"c. 1901; 1921","architect_builder":"Castle, David S.","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Movements/Prairie School","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as a private single dwelling, with a current function of domestic/single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.963766-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/9700/40970056/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/96000308.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000308/0f7fd79456-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000308/0f7fd79456-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"MLL","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alexander-Campbell_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">MLL</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alexander-Campbell_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970056","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107320227"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/taylor-county/alexander-campbell-house-96000308/"}
