It was Stone's first private commission and is among the earliest International style houses in the United States. It retains exceptional integrity inside and out, including a good portion of its original furnishings.","narrative":"Perched on the highest point of a sloping site overlooking the Croton Reservoir, this Bedford Hills residence is a two-story, Z-shaped International style house of concrete block, steel frame and stucco. Built between 1933 and 1935 for Richard H. Mandel, his wife and their two young children, it has flat roofs, smooth white walls without applied ornament, projecting balconies and wide bands of ribbon windows. A two-story circular dining room links two L-shaped zones of the plan. It was the first private commission of architect Edward Durell Stone, and industrial designer Donald Deskey created the interiors and original furniture, much of which survives. The house is among the earliest in the United States in the International style. Its interior remains largely intact, with original finishes such as cork, terrazzo and slate, and indirect lighting. Although about forty acres of the original estate were sold, the surrounding landscape and the views toward the reservoir are largely preserved.","period_of_significance":"1935","architect_builder":"Edward Durell Stone; Donald Deskey","architectural_style":"International Style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still a single dwelling. The building suffered neglect over the years, but the current owner is repairing it. The pool house was demolished and the tennis courts are in disrepair.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.009739-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000176.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000176/06b4afdcec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000176/06b4afdcec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Fjolset","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mandel_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fjolset</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mandel_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323095","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_H._Mandel_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7326166"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/mandel-richard-h-house-96000176/"}
