It sits on a parcel of less than one acre, the remnant of its original farm.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C as a representative example of the vernacular dwelling type built in Cornwall from 1734 to 1830. It is a rare intact stone farmhouse with Federal period detailing from the post-Revolutionary period. It retains much of its original form, framing, floor plan, chimney and interior woodwork.","narrative":"This small stone farmhouse on Route 32 in Cornwall-on-Hudson, Orange County, was probably built around 1830. It is a one-and-a-half-story, three-bay house with a side-hall plan, built of uncoursed fieldstone, with larger stones set at the corners of the front facade like quoins. A twentieth-century frame addition at the rear holds a modern kitchen. Inside, the house keeps wideboard floors, hand-hewn ceiling beams, two fireplaces with Federal period mantels, early plaster and original woodwork. The original kitchen was in the cellar, where a Dutch oven opening is still visible. The earliest recorded mention of the house is an 1856 deed, when Benjamin Woodruff, an early settler, sold the house and farm to Patrick McGonigal. It was listed for its architecture. It contrasts with the larger two-story Federal and Greek Revival houses of its time and shows that Cornwall's stone building tradition continued into the nineteenth century. The house remains a single-family home.","period_of_significance":"ca.1830","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular (Federal period detailing)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains in use as a single-family dwelling; retains a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.916296-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000156.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000156/db6a7f0334-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000156/db6a7f0334-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodruff_House,_Cornwall,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodruff_House,_Cornwall,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314201","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodruff_House_(Cornwall,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8033240"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/woodruff-house-96000156/"}
