It keeps a high degree of integrity, including original windows, doors, mantels, wide board flooring and Federal woodwork. It also reflects the early settlement of the Van Duzer family and the farm that Mary Van Duzer-Sayer and her husband operated.","narrative":"This stone farmhouse on Taylor Road in Cornwall, Orange County, was built in 1832 on land that Mary Van Duzer-Sayer received from her father, Henry Van Duzer, part of the original tract of one of Cornwall's earliest settler families. The two-story, five-bay, center-hall house is built of coursed fieldstone with larger quoins, and a one-story brick addition extends from the north end. A wide portico with Tuscan columns shelters the central door, which has sidelights, and twelve-over-twelve windows with brownstone lintels sit beneath a wood-shingled gable roof. Inside, the house keeps its original room layout, two 1832 mantels, wide board floors, early plaster and Federal moldings. Mary and her husband William Sayer, a farmer and merchant, ran a farm here that the Orange County Agricultural Society named a prize farm in 1841. The house was recognized as an intact example of a Federal-period stone farmhouse in Cornwall, with a root cellar built into the hillside nearby.","period_of_significance":"ca.1832","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic / Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently in use as a single-family dwelling, and described as retaining a high degree of exterior and interior integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:49.932856-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000155.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000155/8c15a837e2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000155/8c15a837e2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mary_Van_Duzer-Sayer_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mary_Van_Duzer-Sayer_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314143","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Van_Duzer-Sayer_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6780881"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/van-duzer-sayer-mary-house-96000155/"}
