Its gambrel roof is unusual for a stone house and suggests a New England origin. Its sidelights, transom and brick window surrounds mark the shift from simple vernacular houses to more decorative Federal ones.","narrative":"Built about 1800 to 1810, this two-story fieldstone farmhouse on Angola Road in Cornwall, New York, was constructed by Mathias Carney on land once part of a 1735 grant to early settler Isaac Bobbin. Carney is also believed to have run a small mill on the stream east of the house, though the mill no longer exists. Benjamin Gatfield bought the property in the mid-1800s, and it stayed in his family until about 1903. The three-bay house has a gambrel roof, unusual on a stone building, along with an entrance with sidelights and a transom and brick window surrounds. Inside, it keeps its original plan, a Federal stair rail, a pair of original newel posts and hand-hewn beams with interlocking joints. A large barn encloses an earlier barn frame from about 1800. The house was listed as a rare intact stone farmhouse with Federal detailing from Cornwall's post-Revolutionary years.","period_of_significance":"ca.1800, ca.1900 (text also cites an 1800-1810 period)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic / Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; the nomination describes the house as retaining a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.847449-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000152.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000152/8cdb8f1b5b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000152/8cdb8f1b5b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carvey-Gatfield_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carvey-Gatfield_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314139","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carvey%E2%80%93Gatfield_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5047565"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/carvey-gatfield-house-96000152/"}
