It retains original porches, windows, doors, marble mantels, staircases and woodwork. It meets the registration requirements for the Victorian Dwellings, 1850-1900 property type in the Cornwall multiple property study.","narrative":"Standing on two acres along Angola Road in Cornwall, Orange County, this two-and-one-half story wood frame house was built for Daniel Sutherland, a prominent local lawyer and grandson of one of Cornwall's first settlers. He bought the land from the early-settling Chadayne family before 1875 and built the house for himself and his wife. The form dates construction between about 1875 and 1886. Sutherland died in 1887 at age 36, and around 1900 the house served as a rooming house. It is a vernacular interpretation of the Stick style, with clapboard siding, cross gables, decorative cutwork, wood brackets, a three-story pavilion with a pyramidal roof, and a one-story porch. Inside, a center hall plan preserves hardwood floors, marble mantels, ceiling medallions, paneled doors and original staircases. It was listed as a well-preserved example of Victorian dwellings built in Cornwall between 1850 and 1900. Modern development has erased the surrounding historic setting, but the house itself remains largely unaltered.","period_of_significance":"1875-80","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian / Stick Style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single-family residence; the interior and exterior are described as highly intact, with little alteration since construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.827138-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000147.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000147/73346520d8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000147/73346520d8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Sutherland_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Sutherland_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314187","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Sutherland_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706234"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/sutherland-daniel-house-96000147/"}
