Construction began in 1816 and the building was first used in 1818.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is an exceptionally intact example of a Federal-era meeting house in Greene County and one of the county's earliest surviving church buildings. It keeps a high degree of exterior and interior integrity. It is also a local landmark tied to the early nineteenth-century settlement of this part of the Hudson Valley.","narrative":"Built of random coursed limestone on a rubblestone foundation, this two-story church sits at the corner of County Route 23B and Church Street in Leeds, Greene County. Its three-bay front has a central pair of six-panel doors under a fanlight, flanked by smaller fanlit entrances, and the windows keep their original twelve-over-twelve sash. A two-stage belfry with an octagonal spire was added about 1855. The congregation decided in 1816 to move into the growing hamlet then called Madison, and the first service was held on July 4, 1818, in the unfinished building. Stone was quarried by local farmers near Green Lake. Inside, the vestibule and auditorium plan survives, along with the original pews, wainscotting and a gallery on iron arches added in a late nineteenth-century remodeling. An 1870 pipe organ is also noted. The nomination describes it as a builder's adaptation of the Federal style, valued for its simplicity and its remarkable integrity.","period_of_significance":"ca.1818-ca.1890","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal; Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used for religious purposes; the form lists religious use as both historic and current function.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.058733-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000141.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000141/c64eb8dc22-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000141/c64eb8dc22-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leeds_Dutch_Reformed_Church_Jul_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leeds_Dutch_Reformed_Church_Jul_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317992","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leeds_Dutch_Reformed_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6515955"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/leeds-dutch-reformed-church-96000141/"}
