It is also significant for its collection of funerary art spanning nearly two centuries. It holds the graves of many of Yates County's founding families and of veterans of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.","narrative":"Lake View Cemetery occupies about 50 acres on the western edge of Penn Yan, New York, on a gently rolling south-facing slope. David Wagener set aside two acres for a public burying ground in 1799 and became its first burial. In the mid-nineteenth century the grounds were reshaped as a Rural Cemetery, with winding roads, lobed burial sections, naturalistic plantings and views toward Keuka Lake. In 1906 landscape architect Albert Davis Taylor of Cornell University laid out a ten-acre addition on the more open lawn-park model, with flatter ground and smaller, more uniform markers. Buildings include a ca.1880 caretaker's cottage and the brick Gothic Revival Abraham Wagener Memorial Chapel of 1923-24. Monuments range from early marble and sandstone markers to obelisks, urns, children's memorials and cast iron plot fences. The cemetery contains the graves of many founding families of Yates County, fifteen Revolutionary War veterans and numerous Civil War veterans.","period_of_significance":"1799-1945","architect_builder":"Taylor, Albert Davis","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a cemetery; retains significant landscape elements from each phase of development, though the Elm Street gates are modern and a former veranda on the caretaker's cottage was enclosed in the early twentieth century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.124998-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96000137.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000137/e825f0631b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000137/e825f0631b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Shuvaev","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lake_View_Cemetery,_Penn_Yan_NY_01.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Shuvaev</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lake_View_Cemetery,_Penn_Yan_NY_01.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323372","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_View_Cemetery_(Penn_Yan,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6478289"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/yates-county/lake-view-cemetery-96000137/"}
