It is a balloon-frame building of about 1,400 square feet in the Stick style, with patterned stickwork siding, turned brackets, exposed rafter ends and a bay window where the station master watched for trains. Inside are a freight and baggage room, a station master's office and a waiting room. Some details have been lost, and around 1985 the village replaced several doors with aluminum garage doors. Its importance lies in what the railroad did for the town. Before the line opened in February 1888, Elizabeth was a landlocked village of lead miners and retired farmers. The railway gave farmers a market for livestock and produce, supported new businesses and hotels, and produced the town's strongest growth. The nomination dates its significance from 1888 to 1945.","period_of_significance":"1888-1945","architect_builder":"Chicago Great Western Railway","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Stick","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Owned by the village of Elizabeth and used to store road equipment and signs; the paint is badly deteriorated, and the roof appears in good condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.376689-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/92/8930/28893092/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/96000098.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000098/2ef962688f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000098/2ef962688f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"IvoShandor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elizabeth_Il_Chicago_Great_Western_Depot1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">IvoShandor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elizabeth_Il_Chicago_Great_Western_Depot1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893092","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_station_(Illinois)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5095631"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/jo-daviess-county/chicago-great-western-railroad-depot-96000098/"}
