It was built c. 1827 and enlarged in stages around 1830 and 1835.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the tavern is significant for its association with the early nineteenth-century commercial development of the National Road and for its vernacular Federal style architecture. It is described as one of the surviving masonry National Road taverns, retaining its two-door tavern plan and more original interior woodwork than most.","narrative":"Built around 1827 on the south side of the National Road in Scenery Hill, this two-and-a-half story brick tavern was constructed in stages, with a two-bay east addition around 1830 and a shed-roof rear addition around 1835 that gave the building its saltbox profile. Its facade is laid in Flemish bond and it has two front doors, one leading to the barroom and the other to the stairs, each with a multi-paned transom. The interior retains six-panelled doors, reeded door surrounds and fireplaces with panelled pilasters. Early owners included James Beck, George Ringland and David Railly, and the building was operated as a tavern and stage stop. Its fabric and floor plan are regarded as typical of surviving National Road taverns, and its interior finishes are more complete than most of the others, which is why it is valued for both commerce and architecture.","period_of_significance":"C. 1827-c. 1853","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal (vernacular)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.973075-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/96000091.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000091/6e9c747580-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000091/6e9c747580-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Generic1139","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ringland_Tavern.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Generic1139</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ringland_Tavern.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"96001198","name":"Scenery Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/scenery-hill-historic-district-96001198/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71993977","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringland_Tavern","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7334911"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/washington-county/ringland-tavern-96000091/"}
