It housed the council chambers, police, jail, fire department and clerk. It is also representative of late 19th and early 20th century American town halls with a meeting room and office space.","narrative":"Fairbury City Hall is a two-story brick building at Locust and Third Streets in the center of Fairbury, Illinois. Completed in 1892 at a cost financed by city bonds, it was built on land leased from the Toledo, Peoria, and Western Railroad, a lease that remains in effect. Wiggoner Brownson handled the carpentry, cornice and roof, while Joseph Stickoffer did the masonry. The building held the council chamber upstairs and the jail, police, clerk and fire department below. A clock and bell tower, donated by local merchants, was added in 1912. The building has decorative metal cornices, pedimented window hoods, original jail cells and metal ceilings inside. The fire department moved out in the early 1930s, and the space became offices. It was listed for its long role as the center of local government and politics, with a period of significance from 1892 to 1945. It still serves as city hall, and its original floor plan survives.","period_of_significance":"1892-1945","architect_builder":"Brownson, Wiggoner, Builder; Stickoffer, Joseph, Builder","architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"The building continues to house the city's governmental administration, including the police department and city clerk's office.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.496056-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/8934/28893467/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/96000090.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000090/5b0649d542-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000090/5b0649d542-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"IvoShandor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fairbury_City_Hall1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">IvoShandor</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fairbury_City_Hall1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893467","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairbury_City_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5430050"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/livingston-county/fairbury-city-hall-96000090/"}
