The village was surveyed in 1844 and developed as a linear settlement along the road.","why_significant":"The district is significant under Criterion A for commerce as a local service and commercial center for surrounding agricultural and industrial interests, and under Criterion C for architecture as a concentration of regional vernacular buildings. The nomination states that the district retains a high degree of integrity for the region, with most contributing buildings largely unaltered in form.","narrative":"Marklesburg is a linear village along Bedford Road in the Woodcock Valley of central Pennsylvania, laid out in 1844 with a single row of lots on each side of the road and service alleys behind them. Most of its 61 buildings date from about 1845 to 1870, and many are log or frame houses with clapboard siding that also served as shops, hotels or offices. The village grew as a market and wagon stop, and after 1855 it benefited from the Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroad, which carried coal, iron and agricultural goods. By 1876 it had three stores, a carriage factory, blacksmiths, a harness shop, cobblers, cabinetmakers, a cooper, a gunsmith and two hotels. Its institutional buildings include St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, organized in 1804, and the former Methodist Episcopal Church, built about 1854. The district is significant for its commercial role and for the regional vernacular architecture that shows how a small Ridge and Valley service center developed.","period_of_significance":"1844-1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Gothic Revival; vernacular with Georgian, double-pile and Gothic Revival characteristics","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Mixed use; the former Indian Queen Hotel is being restored and the former town hall is used for storage; the former James Creek School houses the borough office and post office.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.370596-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/96000084.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000084/8e34ca695c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000084/8e34ca695c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Generic1139","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Marklesburg_Historic_District_15446_Raystown_Rd.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Generic1139</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Marklesburg_Historic_District_15446_Raystown_Rd.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996392","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marklesburg_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6771099"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/huntingdon-county/marklesburg-historic-district-96000084/"}
