It is the only remaining example of Italianate ecclesiastical architecture in the village of LaMoille. Its tall arched windows with wooden hoods, arched pilasters and arched corbelling are the main Italianate features, and it retains good integrity despite the loss of Gothic-style steeple and pinnacles.","narrative":"This small white wood-frame church at 94 Franklin Street in LaMoille, Illinois, was built in 1867 and dedicated on December 5 of that year. It replaced an earlier building that burned in February 1867. The church has a rectangular plan, clapboard siding, a metal roof, a painted brick foundation and a square three-level tower at the center of the front. Its tall, thin arched windows with heavy wooden hoods, arched corner pilasters and arched wooden corbels mark it as Italianate. Some Gothic-style details, including the spire steeple and pinnacles, were removed because of deterioration before 1940. Inside, the sanctuary keeps its original pine floors, 26 pews, plaster walls and an 1867 bell. The church was listed for its architecture. It is the only remaining Italianate church in the village, since the other nineteenth-century churches there were Gothic in style, and one of them burned in 1945. The congregation still worships in the building.","period_of_significance":"1867","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Congregation still uses the church; property described as in good condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.032282-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/8917/28891740/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/96000059.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000059/2749fb3721-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96000059/2749fb3721-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Boscophotos","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_First_Congregational_Church.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Boscophotos</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_First_Congregational_Church.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891740","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Congregational_Church_of_LaMoille","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8563348"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/bureau-county/first-congregational-church-of-lamoille-96000059/"}
