It also illustrates the growth of the town's agrarian economy, from large nineteenth-century farms to specialized dairy farming in the early twentieth century.","narrative":"Built in 1857 on the northern edge of East Hampton village, this two-story, gable-front farmhouse blends Greek Revival and Italianate details. It has a side-hall plan, original six-over-six windows, painted wood shingles, a trabeated front doorway with a denticulated entablature, and small bracketed eaves. Stephen Sherrill's family built it on the site of an earlier farmhouse, using Sag Harbor contractor Charles A. Glover at a cost near $5,000. The earlier kitchen wing, believed to date to 1802, was moved behind the house in 1927 and later became a garage and then a studio. A metal wind-pump tower from about 1910 recalls the family's dairy business. The property is what remains of a once much larger farm, and it shows how East Hampton farms grew in the nineteenth century and then specialized in a single marketable product. Its original form, frame, trim and front yard remain largely intact, which supports its listing for architecture and local agricultural history.","period_of_significance":"1802-1927","architect_builder":"Charles A.
