It is also significant as the home of Charles Dawson, a local woolen mill owner who operated the Moss Brook Woolen Mill. It is tied to the growth of Holden's industrial village.","narrative":"Set on a corner lot at 925 Main Street in Holden, this 2 1/2 story clapboard house began around 1847 as a vernacular Italianate dwelling with a five-bay facade, center gable and bracketed eaves. Around 1890 it was enlarged with additions, a porte cochere, and Queen Anne and Colonial Revival details such as a Palladian attic window, stained glass, a curved two-story porch and Roman Doric columns. The nomination describes it as one of Holden's largest and most elaborate surviving late 19th century homes. It was the residence of Charles Dawson (1832-1914) from 1877 to 1910. Dawson founded and led the Dawson Manufacturing Company, which ran the nearby Moss Brook Woolen Mill producing flannels, cheviots and cassimeres. The house stayed in the Dawson family until 1948. It has been divided into four apartments since about 1920, and the nominated area covers roughly half an acre around the house.","period_of_significance":"1847-1945","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate; Queen Anne; Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Divided into four apartments, as it has been since about 1920; described as little altered from its late 19th century state.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.154254-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/34/7974/63797434/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/95001443.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001443/730d13c910-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001443/730d13c910-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HoldenMA_HubbardDawsonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HoldenMA_HubbardDawsonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63797434","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubbard-Dawson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715602"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/hubbard-dawson-house-95001443/"}
