It is one of only two known three-quarter Capes in Holden, where full five-bay and three-bay Capes predominate. Apart from the Rogers Homestead, it is among the least altered and best representations of the type in town.","narrative":"This 1 1/2 story, post-and-beam house on Manning Street in Holden's Jefferson area is a three-quarter Cape Cod built about 1790, with a four-bay south facade, central chimney and granite block foundation. A wing was added around 1880, and two sheds project from the rear. Inside, the original plan survives in the Cape section, including wide-board wainscoting in the parlor, gunstock corner posts in the hall and a large kitchen fireplace with a restored beehive oven. Local history credits Captain Israel Manning, a Revolutionary War veteran and farmer, with building it. The Ball family later owned the farm, which grew to 130 acres and was used for broom making, poultry, dairy and squab production until 1947. It was listed for architecture because it is a rare three-quarter Cape in Holden and one of the town's least altered examples of the form. The surrounding open fields keep much of the historic setting.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1790 - 1945","architect_builder":"Unknown (local history credits construction to Captain Israel Manning)","architectural_style":"Early 19th Century; Other: Cape Cod","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently in use as a single-family dwelling; rehabilitated since 1965, with no surviving outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.598923-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/66/7971/63797166/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/95001442.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001442/3b1aee3c13-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001442/3b1aee3c13-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HoldenMA_ManningBallHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HoldenMA_ManningBallHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63797166","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manning-Ball_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16894616"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/manning-ball-house-95001442/"}
