Blount Street, Raleigh, North Carolina, built in 1916 for physician Dr. Hubert Benbury Haywood and enlarged in 1928. It stands on the southeast corner of Pace and North Blount streets.","why_significant":"The house is significant as a well-detailed early twentieth-century brick residence showing exterior Prairie style characteristics. It is one of only two surviving Prairie-style houses in Raleigh, the other being the Dr. Z.M. Caviness House. It was built by local builder Howard K. Satterfield for a member of a prominent North Carolina medical family, and it retains its historic integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1916 on a corner lot near downtown Raleigh, this dark red brick house was designed with a low hipped roof, deep eaves and massive brick porch piers, features that mark it as Prairie style on the exterior. Inside, the finishes are fully Colonial Revival, including a large foyer with an open-string stair, pocket doors and traditional mantels. Howard K. Satterfield, then a mechanical engineering professor at North Carolina State College, served as builder for Dr. Hubert Benbury Haywood, a Raleigh physician whose family included several eminent doctors. In 1928 the Haywoods added a two-story rear ell, a sleeping porch and reworked the dining room and library. Only two Prairie-influenced houses survive in Raleigh, this one and the Dr. Z.M. Caviness House, which makes the Haywood House a rare local example of the style. It remains a single-family home and retains its historic character.","period_of_significance":"1916-1928","architect_builder":"Satterfield, Howard K., builder","architectural_style":"Prairie School; Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; the form notes a 1990 renovation by the then-current owners, and the interior and exterior retain historic integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.426806-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/81/7224/47722481/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/95001440.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001440/ed31b86220-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001440/ed31b86220-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Hubert_Benbury_Haywood_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Hubert_Benbury_Haywood_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"74001380","name":"Oakwood Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/oakwood-historic-district-74001380/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722481","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Hubert_Benbury_Haywood_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20709181"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/haywood-dr-hubert-benbury-and-marguerite-manor-house-additional-documentation-95001440/"}
