It is also presented as the best surviving tavern associated with the National Road in Somerset County and as a good example of vernacular tavern architecture with Federal style details.","narrative":"Set near the foot of Winding Ridge, a short distance east of Addison, this five-bay frame house was built around 1820 with a central hall and large interior stone gable-end chimneys, features that marked it as a tavern. John Wable is credited with its construction, and the house was operated as an inn through the boom years of the National Road, roughly the 1820s to the mid-1850s. Its Federal-period details survive, including the arched transom, reeded door reveals, bracketed stair stringers, and back-to-back corner fireplaces, along with a hewn-rafter attic that could hold overnight guests. Among the few wood-frame taverns still standing on the road, it is regarded as the best surviving example of a National Road tavern in Somerset County. Later porches and siding have changed its exterior, but its plan and character still convey its early role in the road's commerce.","period_of_significance":"c. 1820-c. 1855","architect_builder":"John Wable (builder)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Retains its early form and floor plan; exterior siding was replaced, twentieth-century porches were added, and the kitchen ell was removed.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:13:36.723869-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/95001353.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001353/16692e9c78-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001353/16692e9c78-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wable-Augustine_Tavern.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wable-Augustine_Tavern.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71993845","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wable-Augustine_Tavern","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7958702"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/somerset-county/wable-augustine-tavern-95001353/"}
