Weary & Kramer designed the original; Dodge & Morrison designed the reconstruction.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the church as a prime example of an auditorium-plan Protestant church by George Kramer, a prolific church architect who popularized that layout. It also reflects the rebuilding by Dodge & Morrison, who kept the surviving outer walls and largely followed Kramer's concept. The building keeps a very high degree of integrity and is listed under architecture and performing arts.","narrative":"Baptist Temple is a large brick and brownstone church at the corner of Third Avenue and Schermerhorn Street in Brooklyn. Built in 1894-95 for a Baptist congregation led by the Reverend Cortland Myers, it was designed by Weary & Kramer, with George Kramer as the actual architect. Kramer was a prolific church designer who helped popularize the auditorium plan, in which seats are arranged in arcs on a raked floor like a theater. The Romanesque Revival exterior is boldly massed, with a rose window, a gabled central pavilion and two corner towers. The auditorium seats about 1,300 people. A fire in 1917 destroyed much of the church, and Dodge & Morrison rebuilt the interior and roof while keeping the outer walls and following Kramer's conception. Only the baptistery and baptismal tank survive from the original interior. The building is valued for its architecture and for its association with Kramer's church design ideas. It remains in religious use and retains a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"1893-1918","architect_builder":"Architects: Weary & Kramer; Dodge & Morrison","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Romanesque Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as somewhat deteriorated but surviving much as rebuilt in 1917-18; still used as a church.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.442695-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/95001334.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001334/7e1175c91e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001334/7e1175c91e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Baptist_Temple_Bklyn_jeh.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Baptist_Temple_Bklyn_jeh.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318315","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_Step_Community_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4857684"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/brooklyn/baptist-temple-95001334/"}
