Its mid-nineteenth century renovation, credited to Captain Martin, added Greek Revival and Gothic Revival features to a vernacular building. It is also associated with Benjamin DuBois, one of the region's first landowners and settlers, and his son Huybartus.","narrative":"Built around 1740 by Benjamin DuBois, this fieldstone cottage at 347 West Main Street in Catskill is the oldest surviving dwelling in the village. It rises one and one-half stories and has five bays, a center entrance and a steeply pitched gable roof. Around 1850 it was remodeled, probably under Captain Martin, with brick infill, a Greek Revival entrance with sidelights, casement windows, a projecting central dormer, scroll-cut eaves and Gothic-style gable vents. The house belonged to one of the area's earliest families. Benjamin DuBois settled on the Loveridge Patent tract, and his son Huybartus lived on the farm from about 1762 until his death in 1809. In the late nineteenth century the house was absorbed into a brick company's lands, and later into school district property, so its original farm setting is gone. Its significance rests on its rare early stone construction and its mid-nineteenth century alterations, which survive largely intact inside and out.","period_of_significance":"ca.1740 - 1809, ca.1850","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial; Mid 19th Century/Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Converted from a single dwelling to education-related use; remains largely unchanged since its mid-nineteenth century renovation and is owned by a school district.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.508406-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/95001333.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001333/030a328adf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001333/030a328adf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RobertDrake2015","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Captain_Martin_Stone_House_8-14-2016.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RobertDrake2015</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Captain_Martin_Stone_House_8-14-2016.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317948","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_DuBois_Stone_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4888493"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/dubois-benjamin-stone-house-captain-martin-stone-house-95001333/"}
