Its present form results from two rebuilding campaigns after lightning fires in 1842 and 1851. Very few alterations have occurred since 1851, so it remains one of the region's best preserved examples of its period and type.","narrative":"Located at the center of Springs, a rural hamlet on Long Island's South Fork, this two-story house was largely shaped by two rebuilding campaigns led by Ambrose Parsons after lightning damaged the family farmhouse in 1842 and again in 1851. The square, shingle-clad building has a granite foundation, a gable-front west facade with a pilastered entrance and modillioned cornice, and a one-story kitchen wing. Its design is a rural, vernacular take on the pedimented Greek Revival houses of nearby Sag Harbor, with local touches such as a four-bay front and shingle siding instead of clapboard. Inside, the 1851 floor plan, moldings, wide-plank floors and fireplaces survive. The Parsons farm once surrounded the house, though the fields and farm buildings are long gone. The house was rented to various tenants through much of the twentieth century, was left to the Town of East Hampton in 1972, and now serves as the Springs Library. It was listed for its well-preserved example of mid-nineteenth century regional architecture.","period_of_significance":"1842-1851","architect_builder":"Ambrose Parsons, builder","architectural_style":"Mid 19th-century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Owned by the Town of East Hampton and currently houses the Springs Library; the interior was lightly rehabilitated in the 1980s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.123223-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/95001276.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001276/57c0be5045-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001276/57c0be5045-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Americasroof (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Parsons-house.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Parsons-house.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322204","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambrose_Parsons_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4741848"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/parsons-ambrose-house-95001276/"}
