S. Peak.","why_significant":"The depot is locally significant under Criterion A for transportation, since it provided passenger, freight and baggage service to Marseilles citizens, businesses and manufacturers. It recalls the high point of the Rock Island line in the Illinois and Michigan Canal Heritage Corridor. It was built after residents won a long fight for a new station.","narrative":"Built in 1917 along the tracks in Marseilles, Illinois, this one-and-one-half story depot served the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad for decades. A court order had required the railroad to provide a new station after a roughly 40-year campaign by townspeople, and T. S. Peak, a Chicago builder, won the contract. The rectangular building, about 90 by 25 feet, has reddish brown brick, white stucco, Indiana limestone trim and a gabled-on-hip tile roof. It handled passengers, baggage and freight for a town whose paper, roofing, box and other factories shipped goods by rail. Rail service ended in 1974, and the building later housed a restaurant before standing empty. Since 1993 it has been a medical clinic, with new walls built inside around the original windows and brick. Its significance rests on its role in local transportation between 1917 and 1945 and as a reminder of the railroad's peak in the Illinois and Michigan Canal corridor.","period_of_significance":"1917-1945","architect_builder":"Peak, T.
