Its design combines Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival elements, including a front porch with three arches and scrolled ironwork. The building has twenty-eight rooms, a full basement, and a lobby with an oak registration desk, oak woodwork and hardwood floors. Many original furnishings survive, such as the hotel safe, gas light fixtures and a well pump. Roodhouse grew into a railroad junction town in the decades after 1863, and travelers needed overnight lodging. This hotel was described as the town's only first class hotel, serving railroad management, line personnel, salesmen and wealthier travelers. It is significant for its role in local commerce between 1895 and 1945, and it is the only remaining hotel in town that retains its original integrity. The building is currently vacant.","period_of_significance":"1895 - 1945","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by John Roodhouse)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne; Romanesque","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Current function listed as vacant/not in use; plaster was partly removed in early 1995 due to deterioration.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.411107-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/8929/28892919/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/95001238.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892919","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_Roodhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18151971"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/greene-county/hotel-roodhouse-95001238/"}
