Under Criterion C, the lodge represents a prototypical design by Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs. The Keeper later amended the period of significance to begin in 1867, when the land was purchased.","narrative":"Richmond National Cemetery occupies 9.74 acres along Williamsburg Road in Henrico County, Virginia. Established on September 1, 1866, it was created so that Union dead from the area around the Confederate capital could receive honored burial. Remains were gathered from roughly seventy locations within 25 miles, including Oakwood and Hollywood Cemeteries, the Belle Isle prison burial ground, and the Cold Harbor and Seven Pines battlefields. Of 9,199 interments recorded in 1995, 5,706 are unknown Civil War soldiers. The grounds are enclosed by a granite and sandstone wall from about 1890. The brick and stone lodge, built in 1870 in the Second Empire style, follows a design by Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs. Other features include a utility building, a gasoline storage building, a flagpole circle with four cast-iron artillery-tube monuments, and the base of a former iron rostrum. The cemetery is listed for its Civil War association and for the lodge's design.","period_of_significance":"1866-1936 (amended to begin in 1867)","architect_builder":"Meigs, Montgomery C.","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Second Empire","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Officially closed to new interments in August 1963, but burials in occupied graves and of cremated remains continue.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.770114-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_AL/95001183.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001183/c9c9bbb22b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001183/c9c9bbb22b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jmurden (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Richmond_national_cemetery_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jmurden (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Richmond_national_cemetery_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/77835177","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richmond_National_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7330920"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/henrico-county/richmond-national-cemetery-95001183/"}
