It was built in 1850 and enlarged in the early twentieth century.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant under Criterion C for architecture. It began as a transitional Greek Revival and Italianate dwelling and was remodeled in the early 1900s with Colonial Revival roof and dormer elements. It retains a high degree of integrity, including original Greek Revival woodwork, and is the oldest dwelling in Riverton. It also played a role in the Civil War Battle of Front Royal.","narrative":"Riverside is a large brick house on a slight hill beside the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, in the Riverton community of Front Royal. Built in 1850, it combined Greek Revival and Italianate features. Around 1900 the flat roof was replaced with a hipped roof and dormers in the Colonial Revival manner, and brick wings were added in 1921. The walls are laid in five-course American bond on a limestone foundation. Inside, the walnut, cherry and pine woodwork is largely unpainted and Greek Revival in character. Two upstairs bedrooms in the side wings were reached only by private stairs from below, which local tradition links to the first owners' strained marriage. During the 1862 Battle of Front Royal the house stood beside the turnpike and was used as a hospital and hiding place. A hidden space under the dining room reportedly sheltered valuables. Now on two and one half acres, the house keeps a secluded, well-preserved setting and a high degree of architectural integrity.","period_of_significance":"1850-1921","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th-century Greek Revival; Late Victorian Italianate; Late 19th and early 20th century Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling with a secondary structure; the house has undergone few alterations in the past fifty years.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.24643-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/6840/41684023/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/95001172.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001172/94e557bb4f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001172/94e557bb4f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RIVERSIDE,_FRONT_ROYAL,_WARREN_COUNTY,_VA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"02000514","name":"Riverton Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/riverton-historic-district-02000514/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684023","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverside_(Front_Royal,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15272739"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/warren-county/riverside-95001172/"}
