The original section was built in 1878 and was enlarged in 1881, 1882 and 1889.","why_significant":"It is significant under Criterion A for its role in the economic development of the St. Helena area, especially the growth of local wine and brandy making in the 1880s. Under a 1877 federal law, growers could store grape brandy tax-free for up to three years in bonded warehouses like this one, which lowered costs and raised vineyard profitability. No other building has these associations.","narrative":"Built in 1878 on Church Street in St. Helena, this stone warehouse was erected to store grape brandy under a federal law that let distillers hold it for up to three years without paying tax. Eleven members of the local viticultural club bought shares in the venture. The first building measured 39 by 58 feet and held about 25,000 gallons. As Napa County wine and brandy production boomed in the 1880s, additions in 1881, 1882 and 1889 raised capacity to about 180,000 gallons. Brandy production fell in the 1890s as phylloxera damaged vineyards, and the last bonded brandy left in 1923 during Prohibition. Later uses included general storage, light industry, offices and an auto repair shop, which led to stucco and a widened doorway on part of the facade. The thick undressed stone walls, three of four original arched doorways and many original roof trusses survive. The building recalls the era when brandy-making helped local vineyards prosper.","period_of_significance":"1878-1923","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"No Style","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Currently used for commerce/business; the front elevation was altered by stucco and an enlarged doorway, but the stone walls and much original fabric remain.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.370409-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/95001154.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001154/7ead087be1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001154/7ead087be1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Special_Internal_Revenue_Bonded_Warehouse,_First_District,_No._13,_1216_Church_St.,_St._Helena,_CA_10-9-2011_6-18-04_PM.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Special_Internal_Revenue_Bonded_Warehouse,_First_District,_No._13,_1216_Church_St.,_St._Helena,_CA_10-9-2011_6-18-04_PM.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860094","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133320223"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/napa-county/special-internal-revenue-bonded-warehouse-first-district-no-13-95001154/"}
