The complex has also long served as the county seat of government, which survived attempts by Cobleskill to take it in 1870 and 1914.","narrative":"Two limestone buildings on Main Street in Schoharie make up the county's seat of government: the 1870 courthouse and the 1914 County Clerk's Office. The courthouse, designed by Albany builder/architect John Cornelius, replaced two earlier courthouses lost to fire in 1845 and 1870 and was built at a cost of $25,000 as a fire-proof structure. Its cast iron entrance, pyramidal corner towers, cupola with wrought iron cresting and third-floor courtroom combine Italianate and Second Empire elements. The courtroom retains its original features, including ceiling grilles embossed with a hop plant motif. The Clerk's Office was built to hold county records after a 1913 state law required secure storage, and was completed in December 1914. Cobleskill twice sought to take the county seat, but Schoharie kept it. Cornelius is tied to only two surviving buildings, which adds to the courthouse's rarity. Both buildings are still used daily for county government.","period_of_significance":"1870-1914","architect_builder":"John Cornelius (courthouse, 1870); Demers, Mosley and Champaign, Architects, of Troy, and Nial Bros. construction firm (Clerk's Office, 1914)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Both the courthouse and the Clerk's Office remain in active use for county government functions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.055-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/95001010.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001010/f2552abbc8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95001010/f2552abbc8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schoharie_County_Courthouse_Feb_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schoharie_County_Courthouse_Feb_09.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100003624","name":"Schoharie Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/schoharie-village-historic-district-100003624/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321763","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schoharie_County_Courthouse_Complex","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7432012"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schoharie-county/schoharie-county-courthouse-complex-95001010/"}
